MSU alumni receive Emmy awards
Two alumni of Murray State University’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communications have won Emmy awards for their work at WTVF Channel 5 in Nashville. They are Amy Bryan Watson, 1989 broadcast journalism graduate from Murray, and Jerry Walker, a 1995 electronic media graduate from Mayfield. They received the awards at the 24th annual Mid-South Emmy awards banquet Jan. 30. Bryan, a co-anchor of the “This Morning” show, won the award along with her morning show colleagues for Best Live Special Event. The event was the “Let Freedom Sing” July 4th Riverfront Celebration. This was Watson’s fourth Emmy nomination. Walker, promotion producer at WTVF, won three Emmy awards: Best PSA Campaign, “Nashville Rescue Mission: Hunger to Hope Campaign;” Best Promotional Campaign, News, “Morning People;” and Best Short Form Photography, “JWalker Pictures.”
Watson came to WTVF in 2006. Prior to that, she had worked as reporter and evening anchor for 12 years at WPSD-TV Channel 6 in Paducah. Her other broadcast experience includes WDEF in Chattanooga, Tenn., KFVS in Cape Girardeau, Mo.; and TV 43 in Hopkinsville. While at WPSD-TV Watson won several Associated Press Awards, including Best Reporter and Writing Excellence. She also won a RTNDA (Radio-TV News Directors Association) award for Best News Feature. She has also been featured on the “Health Break” TV spots since 2006 for Western Baptist Hospital that are seen in the west Kentucky area. Watson lives in Hopkinsville with her husband Derrick and her three children: Aaron, Sarah and Anna.
Walker has now won eight Emmys and received 27 nominations for news or promotion. He has been the promotion producer for WTVF since 2004. Prior to working in promotion, he was a photojournalist at WTVF from 1997 to 2004. His other photojournalism experience includes WHBQ-TV, Memphis; KFVS-TV, Cape Girardeau, Mo.; and WPSD-TV, Paducah. While a news photographer Walker received several National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) awards, including being on the staff of the National Station of the Year in 2003. He has won the CBS Eye on Excellence Award for TV promotion and has produced three documentaries and several short films and videos as an independent producer. Three of these films have received recognition at the Nashville Independent Film Festival. Walker lives with his wife Marian and son Gibb in Pleasant View, Tenn., halfway between Nashville and Clarksville. The Mid-South Emmy region includes broadcast stations in Tennessee, North Carolina and Alabama.
