Dr. Ted Brown, Dean
College of Humaities and Fine Arts
Greetings from the College of Humanities and Fine Arts!
CHFA is the largest and most diverse academic unit at MSU, with 22 majors, 14 areas, and 25 minors offered by over 120 full-time faculty members from our eight departments: Art & Design, English & Philosophy, History, Modern Languages, Music, Psychology, and Theatre. The college also hosts the university’s imaginative Liberal Arts major, which features study of multiple academic areas as well as a study abroad component.
The college emphasizes innovation as well as excellence. Our new academic programs this year include an online Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree, an added business-focused track to the Music Business major, and three new tracks (Aesthetics and Media Writing, Political Thought, and Religious Thought) in the Philosophy major. In addition, college faculty and staff members are engaged this year in a major strategic planning exercise, Project 20/20, through which committees are meeting and making recommendations on topics ranging from academic innovation to promoting scholarly/creative activity to best uses of technology to improving faculty mentoring and development. The world around us is changing quickly, and we in CHFA realize that higher education needs to adapt to those changes while still preserving its core values and mission.
In addition to our many academic offerings, CHFA stands as the cultural center of our campus and our region. Whether it’s a spine-tingling Racer Band performance, an outstanding musical like Honk! (on at Johnson Theater this weekend—get your tickets now), the fabulous MSU Shakespeare Festival, a striking art exhibition at the Clara Eagle Gallery (check out the annual Art & Design department auction tonight at the gallery), or one of the scores of other performances and presentations available throughout the year (the vast majority of them free of charge), the talented students and faculty of CHFA ensure that there is always something worthwhile to do in Murray, KY.
A question I am often asked by students and their parents is “I like those subjects and all, but what can you do with a degree in the arts or the humanities?” The answer to that question is “Just about anything you want.” The skills developed through study of the disciplines in this college (effective communication, critical thinking, creativity, the ability to work productively with others) are precisely the skills being sought by employers across America and around the world. In a major study conducted earlier this year, more than 93% of the 300 American employers surveyed agreed with the statement that “Candidates’ demonstrated capacity to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems is more important than their undergraduate major.” Our graduates are very well prepared to take their places in the working world, and CHFA alumni hold a wide variety of rewarding positions across the professional spectrum.
CHFA is firmly committed to excellence in terms of academic programs, cultural offerings, and vocational readiness. Like the other outstanding academic colleges and schools at MSU, we strive every day to provide students with the very best education and career preparation possible.
Have a good end of the semester, and let me be among the first to wish you Happy Holidays!
